As of September 2026, American Made has pushed its way into HBO Max’s top five most-watched movies. For a Tom Cruise thriller that seemed to have had its theatrical moment years ago, that’s a pretty unexpected streaming comeback.
Doug Liman directed it, and Cruise plays Barry Seal, a former TWA pilot who gets pulled into CIA reconnaissance and courier jobs in Central America, then slips further off the rails and starts smuggling drugs for the Medellín Cartel. That whole stranger-than-fiction blend of biographical crime story, dark comedy, political satire, and fast-moving thriller energy probably has a lot to do with why people are finding it again.
It also gives Cruise one of his weirder, more interesting star turns. Barry Seal is charming, reckless, and more compromised by the minute, not the polished hero Cruise usually plays. If most of your Tom Cruise reference points are Ethan Hunt or Pete Mitchell, this one’s well worth a look on streaming.
Which also helps make sense of why American Made is popping now. The movie made a respectable, though hardly huge, $134.9 million worldwide against a $50 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo, even with strong reviews and an 85% Certified Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes. Now it’s finding a bigger audience after The Mummy, Top Gun: Maverick, the end of Mission: Impossible in 2025, and all the attention already building around Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s Digger ahead of its October 2026 release.
