Apple is reportedly accelerating development on a new wearable: smart glasses enhanced by Apple Intelligence, aiming for a release by the end of 2026. Positioned as a rival to Meta’s Ray-Ban glasses and devices from Google’s Android XR platform, these glasses represent Apple’s boldest move yet in blending AI with everyday hardware.
Apple wants smart glasses to lead its AI hardware wave
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the glasses will include cameras, microphones, and speakers, supporting real-world tasks like music playback, live translations, and phone calls. While augmented reality (AR) displays are part of the long-term vision, Apple may delay their inclusion in early models.
Development is being led by the Vision Products Group—the same team behind the Vision Pro headset. However, the glasses are now said to be receiving most of the team’s focus, even as Apple also prepares a new Vision Pro version.
Custom chip and AI integration could set them apart
Apple is working on a dedicated chip for the glasses, which could be ready by 2025. These glasses will deeply integrate with Apple Intelligence and a revamped Siri, both of which are expected to improve with iOS 19. This update may mark a turning point, offering a smarter, more versatile digital assistant experience on all Apple devices.
Competitive pressure is mounting
The urgency partly stems from OpenAI’s partnership with Jony Ive to develop a new AI-first device, which could shift consumer expectations. Apple, aware of the threat, is determined to lead the next generation of AI wearables.
