Apple Music’s new design has been “created by sound” and this video proves it

After seeing Apple Music’s new icon in the iOS 27.2 betas, Apple has officially unveiled its new look. It replaces red with black and white, and does so with a design that is based on a very interesting idea: music itself has shaped the service’s new design.

Music made visual

According to the video published by Apple (below), Apple used a container with mineral oil and a device that allowed them to transform sound into vibrations. The notes make the liquid vibrate at different frequencies. Under the surface of the water, Apple Music’s graphic elements were placed and, when filmed, the waves created the moving-glass effect we see in the new logo.

Apple has worked with British producer Fred again.. and NEST Acoustics, who are responsible for the original composition. Seeing the result, and its simplicity, it’s easy to overlook everything behind a design like this.

The rollout will begin, presumably, next week with the new updates, coinciding with the launch of the iPhone Duo. From Discovery Station to Apple Music Classical, Apple’s music service has evolved a lot. Now, Apple reflects some of that evolution in its visual identity. One that turns music itself into the centerpiece of its look.
