Apple’s failed electric and autonomous car could be revived thanks to an unexpected partner

Apple could leverage its 10 years of research on electric vehicles and autonomous driving and partner with another company, such as Rivian.

At the beginning of this year, Apple canceled its decade-long initiative on the electric car Project Titan, but a new report from DigiTimes claims that Apple’s ambitions in electric vehicles may not be over.

According to the article, Apple is “evaluating the possibility of partnering with a certain US electric vehicle company, and Rivian is a very likely candidate”.

The report states that “there is speculation among supply chains” that Apple is investigating the possibility of partnering with an electric vehicle startup.

DigiTimes suggests that Apple could leverage its 10 years of research on electric vehicles and autonomous driving and partner with another company instead of manufacturing its own car.

Although “it is not known for certain what form such collaboration could take”, this report suggests that Rivian is the leading candidate, based on supply chain sources.

The DigiTimes report does not provide further details. It is unclear what a partnership between Apple and Rivian would look like, or if Rivian would even be interested in such an agreement. Nevertheless, at least according to DigiTimes’ supply chain sources, it is something that Apple is “considering”.

But as much as we would like to see a partnership between Apple and Rivian, it seems very unlikely. The report is lacking in details, and it sounds like it is purely based on speculation among Apple’s suppliers. Let’s wait for something more concrete before getting excited.
