The issue of surrogacy is very controversial all over the world. In some countries it is totally legal, in others it is forbidden. Spain is one of those countries that does not allow it, while the United States does.
Ana Obregón, one of the most famous actresses in our country, has brought back the eternal debate to social networks and bars all over Spain because she has made a decision that is illegal here: she has had a child through surrogacy.
As in Spain this way of having children is illegal, the actress has gone to the United States, a country where this practice is legal, and there she has carried out the process. Now she can register the baby as hers, even though she is not the biological mother, and bring it to our country.
The debate is long and intense and we are not here to discuss whether it is right or wrong, only that in Spain it is illegal for many reasons. Today we are going to talk about series and movies that dealt with this issue on the big and small screen.
Series and movies that deal with surrogacy
Friends (1994-2004): one of the most famous series in history dealt with this issue more than 20 years ago. Curiously, they did it from an altruistic and non-economic point of view, since Phoebe volunteers to gestate her brother’s children, since his wife could not carry out a pregnancy.
The Handmaid’s Tale (2017-2023): based on the novel by Margaret Atwood, it is the most famous title that talks about surrogacy, albeit from a dystopian science fiction perspective. One with this series raises the practice.

Like the others (2018): surrogacy has many buts and one of them is when the biological father wants to have access to the newborn baby. This French film deals with the subject in a very fine and incisive way.
Sole (2019): again in a film we are shown the more negative side of surrogacy, but here from the point of view of people who live in a country where it is not legal and you have to cheat in order to go ahead with your plans. It won an award at the Venice Film Festival and a David de Donatello.
The Daughter (2021): Irene is fifteen years old and lives in a center for minors. She has just become pregnant and is determined to change her life thanks to Javier, one of the center’s educators.
Javier offers her to live with him and his wife Adela in the house they have in an isolated place so that she can carry her pregnancy to term. The only condition in exchange is that she agrees to give them the baby she is carrying.
Souvenir (2019): is a Mexican film that touches on a topic that is not usually talked about much in this country: surrogate pregnancy.
Filmmaker Armond Cohen made this film with the aim of bringing to the table the lack of information that exists around this controversial and controversial issue that is only legal in two Mexican states: Sinaloa and Tabasco.
