Nokia golf swing analysis with Pro Session Golf

Pro Session GolfOK, two things to say quickly. One, this appears to be an amazing use of mobile technology. Two, it won’t make you any better at golf. Or should I say probably won’t in case we get into any trouble legally. It’s just I have a particularly keen memory of how faith in golf technologies, and little dimpled amateurs who pose as golf teachers because they can’t make it as professionals, can end up costing a lot of money and time. Yes, I once thought I could be good at golf. Not once. About 37 times. From the ages of 13 to 24. The prime of my life. All gone because I used to hang around driving ranges hitting so many yellow balls into the dark that I had to sit in front of the television holding bags of frozen vegetables to soothe my blisters. Anyway, enough confessions.

If you’ve ever had a ‘video’ golf lesson (and I can tell you a few things about the hours I’ve spent on video golf lessons) you’ll know about swing analysis. Well now using Pro Session Golf (available for Nokia N95, N93i, N93, or N73) one thing you don’t need is a teacher. Although if you don’t know anything about swing analysis it might be worth buying a few books. Because this is a little complicated. The software allows you to record your swing; you do need someone to film you. Then by measuring the angles of trajectory and comparing two different swings in split-screen mode you can quickly see how you need to alter your upswing, downswing, hip swivel, weight transfer or whatever else is going wrong. Probably all of it. The software allows pausing, frame-by-frame playback, rewind and fast forward as well as selecting and marking any point of the swing. I have to say it looks amazing, but I suggest you don’t play around with it until you know what you’re doing. Either that or just give the game up completely. That worked for me.

Freezing fishing puzzle game

Crazysoft PsarakiaFishing in the North Pole can be a rather chilling experience, especially for the fish. And so it is in this puzzle game, where not only do you have to pull out as many colourful fishys from the freezing water as you can but you need to defrost them from the ice too. Oh and there’s only a limited amount of time for you to be able to do this.

Star gazing from your mobile

Big Dipper - easy to spot!I’ve got pretty bored of sleep recently, it seems such a waste of a perfectly good nine hours. So I’ve been looking for some things to do. Walking the streets has certainly introduced me to some interesting ‘characters’ and listening to music just brings the neighbours round. In their pyjamas! It was as I was shouting out of the window to one of them that I saw the most amazing constellation in the sky. ‘Stars’, it seemed to be saying. It was difficult to read. Which is why I decided to become an astronomical expert. And here’s how I did it:

  • Skychart (Palm) – Space as it is above your head
  • Astro Info (Palm) – Planet viewing to the second
  • Pocket Stars (Pocket PC, Win Mobile) – Highly accurate star-finder and navigator
  • VITO AstroNavigator II (Pocket PC, Win Mobile) – GPS displays the stars you should see
  • Taiyoukei (Pocket PC) – Incredible planetary images including moon phases
  • StarPop (Palm and Pocket PC) – And a little game for you when it gets too cloudy

Publish eBay listings from your mobile

Midprofile for eBayI don’t know about you but more often than not when I want to buy something on eBay, I find that I have to set my alarm so I can concentrate on the bidding as the vital final seconds of the auction run down. Either that or click ‘buy now’, but that just takes all the fun out of eBay. Well if you’re sick of living your life to eBay deadlines here’s something you’ll be interested in. It’s a mobile solution that allows you to upload listings and bid for products all from your phone.

Explore the palaces of ancient Egypt

Atlantis ReduxI still haven’t managed to find the lost city of Atlantis, so I thought I’d have a stab at this game in the hope it will give me some clues. Atlantis Redux sees you assume the role of a young archeologist who must travel to the most mysterious corners of ancient Egypt. Along the way you get to explore palaces, deserts, and evertually, the aquatic wonder of the fabled city itself.

Quickly retrieve vital data from your phone

AllFinderHow many times have you sent or received text messages only to want to find them again days or weeks later? It can be a tortuous process especially if the message is from or to someone you communicate with regularly. With AllFinder it doesn’t matter how many messages you must search through because the software works using keywords.

Animal madness for your mobile

Do not panic the penguinsIt suddenly struck me the other day that I was writing a lot of reviews about animals that had gone completely crazy. Now I don’t know how much global warming, deforestation or cheap air-travel has got to do with this but it’s been worrying me. I mean if snails do start firing missiles or penguins start panicking what are we supposed to do? I’ve never dealt with a panicking penguin before and there’s no sign of a survival pack arriving, which I assume would include a colourful bar of chocolate with a calming joke. Here are some of the mad monsters we need to look out for:

  • Bang! Bang! (Palm) – Shoot pigeons from your garden
  • Icebloxx (Symbian) – Penguins vs fire and ice
  • Go Bananas! (Symbian) – Marvin the Monkey goes mad
  • Whack-A-Monty (Pocket) – New Super Mario Bros fun with moles and Luigi
  • Snails – (Pocket, Symbian, Win Mobile) – Missiles, war and super-fast snails
  • Penguin Panic (Pocket, Win Mobile) – Tetris with very nervous penguins
  • Chuzzle (Pocket) – Chuzzles are very rare animals: they keep exploding
  • Lemmings (Pocket, Palm) – Diggers, parachuters, blockers – kill them all
  • Amoebax (Symbian) – Parasite paradise in a Tetris-style puzzle
  • Animals of Mass Destruction (Win Mobile) – Angry muts with machine guns

LiveMocha: a social networking language learner

LiveMocha lesson (not our picture, a screenshot from the developer's website)It’s been a few days now since I told you about Mango, a great online resource for learning a new language, so I hope you’ve at least tried out a few phrases in a foreign tongue. However, no sooner have I given you the best new way of speaking to people with funny accents than I’ve discovered another. And this one’s got a social networking aspect to it.

LiveMocha offers over 20 language courses including Chinese, Japanese, Hindu, Arabic, Ukrainian as well as the favourites like English and Spanish. Each lesson comes with four stages of learning – learn, read, listen and magnet (which is where you drag and drop correct words into spaces) – and each course has four levels of difficulty from nouns to complex sentence structure and conversations. All words andLiveMocha old lady phrases are delivered by a clear speaker and the pictures are great, if not a bit bizarre. There are also very useful quick tips available at each step.

However, LiveMocha’s unique selling point is its social networking aspect. As a user of the site you are able to see who else is on your course and, so long as you have a microphone you can speak to each other. You can communicate by typing but if you want to practise a new language then you should be speaking. This is an exciting Web 2.0 aspect which appears to have great potential. If I’m learning Spanish I can say ‘Hola’ to Pablo in Madrid and he can say ‘Good day, fine fellow’ to me. I just hope the people at LiveMocha don’t overlook the teaching side of the site in pursuit of social networking geld, dinero, soldi or simple cash.

Get your kicks from table-soccer

Master KickHere at Softonic we like nothing more than a game of table-soccer over a quiet drink at the beginning, middle and end of the day, by which time it’s usually got quite aggressive and no-one is talking to anyone anymore. Then we leave for the night ready to do the same thing again tomorrow. Oh how I longed for a day when I could enjoy the fun of table-soccer without having to play my colleagues. Well, imagine my excitement when I found Master Kick.
