According to senior producer Anthony Nicholson, the new game will seek to balance the essence that made the franchise popular with a more mature tone, moving away from the excesses of crude humor that characterized some previous installments.
Much more than a shooter
The game will take place on the planet Kairos, a setting that is presented as more serious compared to the environments of other recent spin-offs. Although elements of madness and humor will continue to be part of the game, Gearbox aims for a narrative approach that combines the series’ characteristic fun with a more intense and serious atmosphere. Nicholson has assured that they will seek to maintain the essence of the original humor and the comedic opportunities that were explored in Borderlands 2.
One of the most exciting features of Borderlands 4 is the promise of offering thousands of weapons and accessories, along with more diverse and deeper skill trees than in previous installments. This will allow players to customize their characters in unprecedented ways and create more varied and effective builds. Although it is not intended to create an open-world game in the traditional sense, Gearbox has confirmed that there will be a smoother integration between zones and dynamic missions, facilitating exploration without pauses for map loading.
