Brie Larson now says The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is her favorite video game ever, and if you’ve spent even a few hours wandering through Hyrule in Nintendo’s 2017 action-adventure, it’s hard not to see why.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild shook up the Zelda formula with a huge open world that lets you head almost anywhere from the start, figure out puzzles in ways the game doesn’t spell out for you, and use the environment in combat just as much as your weapons.
People still call The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild a masterpiece, mostly because of its sense of discovery, its atmosphere, and the way it lets the story emerge through the player’s own experience. Even with The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom already out, a lot of players still look at Breath of the Wild as the more transformative game, and as a real benchmark for open-world design.
If you’re drawn to immersive worlds, exploration that actually sticks with you, and games that reward creativity instead of just pushing you from one map marker to the next, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is still well worth picking up.
I’ve spent time with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and the thing that still sets it apart is that freedom, the way it lets you get lost, wander off, and make your own fun.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is available on Nintendo Switch and Wii U.
