Cameras, locks, and a bombshell: Apple’s latest in smart home tech brings surprises

According to all the rumors, Apple is preparing major changes to its smart home offering. Just a few days before the supposed October 13 event, we have new information that expands what we expect in addition to the Home Hub, the new HomePod mini, and the new Apple TV. The big surprise, however, lies in Apple’s partnership with LG.

Apple and LG are preparing a complete smart home lineup

Mark Gurman reports in Bloomberg that Apple and LG have worked together on a video doorbell, a thermostat, a smart lock, and several security cameras. The products will carry the LG brand, which will take on manufacturing and support, while Apple participates in design, features, and engineering. It’s a very interesting formula, though surprising, for expanding HomeKit’s reach quickly.

The accessories will use Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Thread, and Matter. The lock will add UWB to the mix, which will enable proximity features that could, for example, open the door automatically when we get home. And all of this will accompany the arrival of Siri AI on the HomePod and Apple’s other home products.

As far as we know, LG’s accessories would arrive a few months after Apple’s new home products. While Apple prepares more devices of its own, home automation is shaping up to become another part of Apple’s ecosystem, and the collaboration with LG may give it the scale it needs from day one.
