Dark is on Netflix right now, and all three seasons are there, so you can watch the whole German-language thriller from beginning to end. It remains one of the smartest sci-fi series Netflix has made, and the fact that the story is complete only makes it better.
The show is set in Winden, where four interconnected families are upended by child disappearances, a strange cave, and a conspiracy that stretches across generations. It has some of that Lost ensemble-mystery pull, but with time-travel consequences that keep changing the town from one era to the next.
What sets Dark apart is that the older-and-younger character reveals, the dense family-tree connections, and all the puzzle-box plotting are there in service of something larger. The series keeps coming back to fate, free will , grief, and inherited trauma. At the same time, it never feels like it’s making things complicated just to stay mysterious. The story is tightly planned , self-contained, and it actually ends, instead of dragging itself out forever.
If you’re looking for ambitious sci-fi that rewards attention and doesn’t fall apart under the weight of its own mysteries, Dark is absolutely worth your time. The 95% Rotten Tomatoes rating helps make that case, and so does its worldwide reach as Netflix’s first German-language original series. Netflix has said that 9 out of 10 season 1 viewers came from outside Germany, with especially strong audiences in the US, Brazil, Italy, Turkey, Spain, and France.
The series was created by Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar. Their follow-up, 1899, was canceled after one season before they moved on to an HBO Max Struwwelpeter project. Dark is streaming now on Netflix.
