Disney said it pretty clearly on The Walt Disney Company’s third-quarter fiscal earnings call: The Mandalorian & Grogu missed at the box office. Executives said the film didn’t deliver the result the company had wanted.
The box office totals show why. The Mandalorian & Grogu finished with $345.2 million worldwide, made up of $177.7 million in the U.S. and Canada and $167.4 million internationally. That came against a $165 million production budget, before global marketing and distribution costs are added in. It also ended below Solo: A Star Wars Story’s $392.9 million, which leaves The Mandalorian & Grogu as the lowest-grossing live-action Star Wars movie so far.
The warning signs showed up early, too. In North America, The Mandalorian & Grogu opened to $98.1 million over the four-day Memorial Day frame, while Solo: A Star Wars Story opened to $103 million. Then it dropped 70% in its second weekend. By weekend three, it had already fallen out of the domestic top five.
If you follow Star Wars box office closely, that shortfall matters. Analysts had put break-even somewhere around $440 million to $590 million, so The Mandalorian & Grogu was likely unprofitable, with possible box office losses above $100 million. Disney still pointed to stronger retail sales and more activity around the Millennium Falcon attraction, framing that as part of the company’s broader mix of streaming, merchandise, games, and parks.
You can still find The Mandalorian on Disney+.
