Beyond the main princess movies, Marvel Studios, and Star Wars, there’s a Disney series that those of us who grew up in the nineties remember with a lot of love: Gargoyles. Aired in three seasons between 1994 and 1997, the animated series was one of the most acclaimed of the studio during that time, and now it will receive its well-deserved revival with a live-action series for Disney Plus.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the streaming platform has commissioned the development of this series, and there are some exciting names attached to it. The studio responsible for producing the series will be Atomic Monster, the company founded by director James Wan, known for the Conjuring universe, as well as Aquaman and Fast & Furious 7. Additionally, the show will be written and directed by Gary Dauberman, a frequent collaborator of Wan, who also wrote both parts of It.
What is Gargoyles about?
The original “Gargoyles” series tells the adventures of a group of ancient gargoyles that are enchanted and come to life at night. Although they are originally from Scotland, they are transported to New York City, where they awaken to become the nighttime guardians against the dark threats lurking in the city.
Despite the original fiction already having touches of gothic elements, it was meant for all audiences, similar to the animated Batman series of the time. We don’t know if, considering who is behind this remake, they will opt for a more extreme horror approach or maintain a moderate tone. Most likely, they will draw on references like the new “Goosebumps” series also airing on Disney Plus. That means keeping the horror tone but making it accessible to everyone.
