Don’t Worry Darling, Olivia Wilde’s 2022 thriller with Florence Pugh and Harry Styles, has worked its way back into the streaming conversation. That’s put fresh attention on how the film performed on HBO Max in the US after it debuted on the service in November 2022.
Wilde directed the film, and Pugh plays Alice, a 1950s housewife living an idyllic company-town life with Jack, played by Styles. That life starts to split at the seams once she begins uncovering a darker truth. The movie had already been a theatrical success, pulling in about $87.6 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo, against a $35 million production budget, according to The Numbers.
When Don’t Worry Darling arrived on HBO Max in the US in November 2022, it reportedly reached 2.7 million households in its first week, according to Samba TV. That makes it fair to call the film a strong streaming hit in the US. Calling it a bigger global hit is harder to fully prove, though, because Warner Bros. and third-party tracking firms haven’t widely released detailed international numbers. And that distinction matters, especially when mixed reviews, praise for Florence Pugh and the film’s visuals, the heavy off-screen controversy, and Pugh’s later boosts from Oppenheimer and Dune: Part Two have all helped keep the movie in view.
If you’re going back through Florence Pugh’s earlier work, Don’t Worry Darling is a good one to catch on HBO Max in the US.
