A sequel script for Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves already exists. Paramount just hasn’t given the movie a green light.
Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley have written the follow-up, but Goldstein says another effects-heavy fantasy movie is still a question mark for a very simple reason: money. Honor Among Thieves brought in about $208.2 million worldwide, according to reported box office totals, against a reported $150 million budget before marketing.
If you loved Honor Among Thieves, that’s enough to keep the sequel on your radar. The first movie landed strong reviews, built a loyal audience, and got a lot of praise for its comedy, heart, action, and cast, including Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, and Hugh Grant. It also managed to catch that chaotic tabletop energy, which isn’t easy, and it picked up more fans once it hit streaming.
Paramount has said another Honor Among Thieves movie could still happen if it can be made for less, though it’s hard to know whether that thinking is still the same under the current leadership. Chris Pine has kept saying he wants to come back. So have the filmmakers. Some people also still point to the first film’s release window, stuck between John Wick: Chapter 4 and The Super Mario Bros. Movie. For now, you can stream Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, and The Forgotten Realms live-action series has moved from Paramount to Netflix.
