The film people are actually talking about is Fair Play, not some supposed crime thriller called The Only Living Pickpocket in New York. Chloe Domont wrote and directed it, Rian Johnson produced it, and the erotic psychological thriller premiered on Netflix on October 6, 2023. It’s still getting attention on the platform.
Fair Play was Domont’s feature debut, and she handled both the screenplay and the direction. The 2023 film has an 86% Certified Fresh critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 235 reviews there, along with a 54% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. On Metacritic, it holds a 73, according to Metacritic.
Critics liked it as a sharp revival of the kind of erotic thriller that was everywhere in the 1990s. Audiences were more split on its bleak, confrontational relationship drama. Johnson produced Fair Play with Ram Bergman through T-Street, and it was the company’s first release in its effort to launch emerging filmmakers.
Phoebe Dynevor and Alden Ehrenreich play hedge fund coworkers whose relationship starts to come apart after her promotion sets off resentment, ambition, manipulation, and power struggles. The Wall Street backdrop pushes Fair Play’s themes even harder: greed, gender politics, masculinity, and control in the workplace.
Dynevor also brought extra visibility from Bridgerton, while Ehrenreich earned praise for the range he shows here. Domont has said she wanted to make something personal, and something that would get people talking.
After a Sundance 2023 bidding war, Netflix bought worldwide rights for a reported $20 million. Fair Play opened in limited theaters on September 29, 2023, arrived on Netflix on October 6, and climbed to No. 1 in the US while also landing in the top 10 in multiple countries, according to Netflix’s Top 10 rankings.
