Fast & Furious finale moves ahead: Sung Kang wants it back to basics

Sung Kang says the final mainline Fast & Furious movie appears to be moving forward, and he wants it to come back down to earth. His hope is for a last chapter that feels more grounded, more back-to-basics, and closer to what the series was when it started.

Kang, who plays Han, is still deeply linked in fans’ minds to The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift and its cult-favorite car scene. He’s said the franchise has “lost our way to a degree,” and he wants the finale to tap back into what made the early movies click: street racing, community, found family, and stakes that felt neighborhood-sized instead of world-ending. He’s also said that making his indie film Drifter helped him reconnect with that scrappy kind of energy.

You can trace the shift pretty clearly. Fast Five moved the series away from tuners and toward heists and giant international set pieces. At the box office, that change paid off, with more than $7 billion worldwide for the franchise, including billion-dollar runs for both Furious 7 and The Fate of the Furious. But it also left part of the audience feeling like the movies had wandered too far from their original identity.

If the earlier, more personal entries are still your favorites, this finale suddenly sounds like one to keep an eye on. Reports have pointed to the title Fast Forever, a budget of about $200 million compared with Fast X’s reported $340 million, the mixed response to Fast X, and the extra emotional weight the series still carries after Paul Walker.

Until Universal Pictures confirms the finale, you can revisit the earlier Fast & Furious movies on the major digital platforms.
