Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, the new The Big Bang Theory spin-off, premiered July 23, 2026 on HBO Max and puts the franchise back in Stuart Bloom’s hands, with Kevin Sussman returning to the role.
What really feels different here is how the show ties itself to The Big Bang Theory. Rather than opening like a familiar sitcom, it starts with a sequence that riffs on the original series’ signature intro and turns it into a running, self-aware joke, complete with episode-specific text, fourth-wall bits like “Spoiler Alert: Gary Dies,” and even Danny Elfman theme variations that make the credits feel like something you actually want to sit through.
The show also makes a pretty sharp break from the old multi-camera, laugh-track setup used by The Big Bang Theory, Young Sheldon, and Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage. This one goes with a single-camera sci-fi comedy style that some early viewers are already comparing to Rick and Morty, while Stuart Bloom, Bert Kibbler, Denise, and Barry Kripke get pulled through a full-on multiverse crisis. Chuck Lorre, Bill Prady, and Zak Penn created the series, and the first reviews have called it bold, weird, and original, even if a few critics aren’t convinced it’ll click with everyone.
