As of September 29, 2026, Full Metal Jacket has logged more than 30 days in HBO Max’s US Top 10. It currently sits at No. 4, behind Fuze, Supergirl, and Backrooms.
That kind of run says a lot about the staying power of a library title pushing 40 years old. For HBO Max, it’s another sign that a classic prestige film can still land like an event watch on audience interest alone.
If you haven’t gone back to Full Metal Jacket in a while, here’s the quick reminder: Stanley Kubrick directed it and adapted it from Gustav Hasford’s The Short-Timers. The film follows Matthew “Joker” Davis from the brutality of Marine boot camp into the Tet Offensive, and it picked up an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.
It’s also easy to see why the movie still holds. The performances stick with you, and Kubrick’s exacting style gives the film both a sharp critique of the military-industrial complex and a bleak portrait of the psychological damage done to young recruits and soldiers. The timing helps, too. Criterion’s The Complete Kubrick arrives in October, and HBO’s Band of Brothers has already shown on Netflix that acclaimed older war stories still travel in a market that’s maturing, with flexible licensing putting back-catalog titles in front of new audiences.
If you stream war films regularly, Full Metal Jacket is well worth putting on your HBO Max list in the US.
