Global EV Sales Surge to 1.7 Million Units in March 2025

Global electric vehicle (EV) sales soared to 1.7 million units in March 2025, reaching a total of 4.1 million for the first quarter, marking a notable 29% year-over-year increase.

This surge reflects robust growth in the EV market, with a remarkable 40% month-over-month jump compared to February 2025, according to data from Rho Motion.

In Europe, EV sales have also seen a healthy expansion, climbing 22% year-to-date, primarily fueled by battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), which experienced a 27% increase.

Global Ev Sales Surge 29% Year-Over-Year in Q1 2025

Germany’s BEV market surged by 37%, Italy skyrocketed by 64%, and the UK set a new record with over 100,000 EVs sold in March alone. However, France faced challenges, with sales dropping 18% due to diminished government subsidies, straining both BEVs and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs).

North America reported a 16% increase in EV sales for Q1 2025, though the market’s outlook appears shaky. This uncertainty arises from recent tariffs imposed by former President Donald Trump, which threaten to raise vehicle prices. The 25% tariff on auto imports from Canada and Mexico, along with broader tariffs on all vehicle imports, could make prominent models like the Tesla Model X and Model S significantly less affordable.

Meanwhile, China remains the undisputed leader in global EV adoption, with sales climbing 36% year-over-year in Q1. As the country approached 1 million units sold in March, it appeared insulated from the tariff turmoil affecting cross-border sales. However, Tesla’s exports of the Model X and Model S from the U.S. could face price hikes as tariffs come into play.

According to Rho Motion’s data manager, Charles Lester, despite the tumultuous policy landscape in North America, the global EV market continues to grow robustly, with record-breaking sales seen in the UK. However, the current economic conditions and evolving tariffs may cool momentum as the industry grapples with competitive pricing against traditional internal combustion engine vehicles.
