Google DeepMind signs A24 deal: a reported $75 million studio bet

According to The Wall Street Journal, Google DeepMind has entered a long-term partnership with A24 to build filmmaking tools. Google is also investing about $75 million in the studio. The Journal said it marks Alphabet’s first direct investment in a film studio.

Google DeepMind and A24 are presenting the software as artist-first, built to support creative work rather than take it over. The idea is to help writers, directors, editors, and other filmmakers move faster while still staying in control. The timing matters. After the 2023 writers’ and actors’ strikes, studios and tech companies are still under pressure over credit, pay, and job security.

A24 filmmakers also won’t be stuck reacting to finished products after the fact. They’ll test Google DeepMind’s tools themselves and help shape them, which creates a much tighter feedback loop than a typical vendor relationship.

One of the first use cases is storyboarding through A24 Labs, the studio’s tech team of roughly 20 people. That’s a sensible place to begin, and a lot less controversial than AI scriptwriting or digitally recreating actors.

The Wall Street Journal also reports that the partnership is non-exclusive, and it doesn’t give Google access to A24’s film and TV catalog for model training. That steers clear of one of the industry’s biggest copyright flashpoints.

For anyone who follows studio tech, this deal is worth watching. A24 may be small, but its influence runs bigger than its size would suggest, and if these tools take hold there, other studios may start treating them more seriously too.

The earliest signs will probably show up inside A24’s own production workflow, not as a consumer-facing product.
