Google Docs now works with Gemini support for Google NotebookLM notebooks, so Gemini can draft, summarize, and tighten up text using your own saved notes and sources. From the Gemini side panel or the bottom bar, you can type “@” and pick a Google NotebookLM notebook. Gemini then treats that notebook as a source and adds inline citations, which lets you check claims, verify quotes, and go back to the original material without leaving the document, Google says.
The practical upside is pretty clear: less copy-pasting, less jumping between tabs, and fewer AI-generated claims hanging there without backup. It also fits Google’s larger Workspace push across Gmail, Sheets, Slides, and Drive. That push is landing as generative AI use keeps spreading, even if the results still look mixed. Recent research found that 47% of U.S. employees were working at organizations using these tools by Q2 2026, while 89% of managers said they hadn’t seen a productivity bump. Google is also trying to hold its ground against Microsoft Copilot and Anthropic in enterprise software.
If you already use Google NotebookLM to collect research, this looks more useful than flashy. Being able to pull that material straight into a draft is the kind of feature people actually use. And Google has the reach to make it matter: more than 3 billion Workspace users and 13 million paying customers as of April 2026, according to the company.
It’s available now in Google Docs for Google Workspace Business Education, and Enterprise users, as well as people with a Google Pro or Ultra subscription, according to Google.

His approach is practical — what a program actually does, what it asks in return and who it is for — which is why he distrusts feature lists and prefers to test. He is part of the team that decides how software gets covered on the site, and works daily with AI tools applied to editorial production.",
