Google opened Gemini 3.5 Transcribe to public preview today, putting its new speech-to-text model in play for voice assistants, meeting notes, and call transcription.
There are separate APIs for live audio streams and pre-recorded files, and Google says Gemini 3.5 Transcribe posts an average 2.6% word error rate on pre-recorded audio and 4.0% on real-time streaming across more than 85 languages.
Google is pitching it as the follow-up to Chirp 3, and says the wait for a finished transcript is about 70% shorter.
According to Google, Gemini 3.5 Transcribe also cleans things up as it goes: it removes filler words like “um” and “uh,” fixes mid-sentence self-corrections, and outputs cleaner formatting. In batch mode, it also adds word-level timestamps and speaker diarization for up to three speakers, with support for more speakers available experimentally.
Google says it’s already working Gemini 3.5 Transcribe into Gboard’s Rambler feature on Android and the Gemini app on macOS. Chrome support is planned next.
If you’re building transcription or captioning tools, this looks like a release that’s worth trying. I’d still keep an eye on how Gemini 3.5 Transcribe deals with accents, dialects , noisy audio, and lower-resource languages once it gets broader real-world use.
You can try Gemini 3.5 Transcribe now through Google’s APIs, with current limits of 10 minutes for live sessions, batch files up to one hour, or 30 minutes if you need diarization. Google’s estimated pricing is $0.005 per batch minute and $0.009 per live minute.
