Since the release of the Barbie trailers and promotional images, audiences have been questioning the premise of the film. The anticipation is palpable, and it is evident even before its release that Barbie is set to be a major success, giving tough competition to its box office rival, Oppenheimer. However, the plot and underlying message of the film remain elusive, leaving everyone wondering about its storyline and the thesis it advocates.
“While Greta Gerwig previously stated that the concept for the film stems from a feminist book that explores how women stop dreaming as they grow up, she has now shed more light on the matter. In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, the director of Little Women and the upcoming Chronicles of Narnia films delved deeper into the topic.”
“I knew I had to tell the story of a mother and daughter”
Barbie was invented in 1959 and continues to be important today, so I wanted to trace the evolution of what the brand has been and deal with the different moments of success and controversy along this journey. I think, for me, it was like, ‘Why does this doll, this icon, experience both successes and controversies?’ Gerwig explains. She continues:
“Often, as with superheroes, you’re either a hero or a villain, good or bad. But I thought, ‘What if she’s as complex as the rest of us?’ I think, generationally, Barbie came to embody that concept. And then, I suppose, because of Barbie’s generational aspect, I knew I had to tell the story of a mother and daughter because Ruth Handler invented it for her daughter.”

Thus, what we know is that Barbie will tell a story between a mother and a daughter, whether in a literal or figurative sense. This means that we will see Margot Robbie’s character alongside her maternal figure… whatever that may actually mean. We will have to wait until July 21st to find out.
