Grok Imagine, xAI’s AI video tool, has been announced as part of an Odyssey project, and xAI owner Elon Musk says it’ll deliver a “historically accurate” version, one “true to the art of Homer,” before the end of the year.
The tease for Grok Imagine also works as a direct shot at Christopher Nolan’s upcoming adaptation of The Odyssey. Musk has gone after the film’s diverse casting, including Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy. Supporters frame that as a push for fidelity; critics see one more Hollywood culture-war skirmish. Musk has even thrown his support behind a Mel Gibson live-action version, with accurate ships , armor, weapons, casting, and Homeric Greek dialogue.
What stands out here is how big the claim is. Grok Imagine has already shown short text-to-video and image-to-video clips, packed with dense visuals and cinematic motion, but a feature-length Odyssey is another matter entirely. To pull that off, it would need character consistency, continuity, pacing, editing, performance direction, sound, music, and script control across a full film.
If you follow AI video tools, this is something to keep an eye on. It’s not something to accept at face value.
Classicists usually treat The Odyssey as a mythic work shaped by oral tradition, not a straightforward historical record, so any “accurate” version comes down to a series of choices: costume, architecture, ethnicity, language, myth versus history, and the biases already baked into the system.
