GTA 6’s November launch could hurt the NBA and NFL, says Steven Adams
Houston Rockets center Steven Adams had some fun with the looming release of Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto VI at the team’s media day on September 22, joking that the game’s November 19, 2026 launch could briefly throw pro sports off track.
Speaking at Rockets media day that day, Adams said the NBA, NFL, NHL, and other leagues could “plummet” in November and “bounce back” in December, with coaches and scouts just as distracted as the players. Anyone who’s ever stayed up too late with a new game and then shown up half-awake to work probably understood why that line landed.
For people who follow both sports and gaming, the context is pretty simple. Adams was obviously joking, but the overlap is real: a 2025 survey found that roughly 75% of NBA players play video games. Research on what that means is mixed. Too much gaming, especially when it costs people sleep, can hurt performance. Other studies point to better reaction time, hand-eye coordination, and spatial awareness. Even so, there’s no serious evidence that GTA 6 is going to wreck any league.
Part of the reason the quote spread so widely is that GTA 6 has grown into something bigger than a game release. Grand Theft Auto V has sold more than 170 million copies, according to Take-Two Interactive, and the chatter around the sequel is already all over the place, from a California car company reportedly planning to pause on launch day to unconfirmed talk of a US Army battalion offering four-day passes.
Rockstar Games says GTA 6 will be available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
