1945 Gyeongseong, back when Seoul still carried its old name, is where Gyeongseong Creature begins. It’s now streaming on Netflix, and it plays as a Korean thriller that gives science fiction and horror the same amount of room. Neither one feels pasted on to support the other.
The series revolves around Najin, a fictional parasite that warps the human body with grotesque force and a stubborn ability to survive. Around that, the historical setting pulls from the documented atrocities of Japan’s Unit 731 and its wartime chemical and biological experiments on civilians.
That mix is what gives the show its punch. You’re watching a monster story, yes, but also something harsher: science with the ethics burned out of it, turned into a weapon by the state and driven by imperial ambition, colonial violence, exploitation, and cruelty. It has more in common with Frankenstein than with a standard creature feature.
If Darker international genre series are already part of your Netflix rotation, especially something like Dark, whose first two seasons reportedly drew 93% of their viewers from outside Germany, this one belongs on the list. The deepest horror here doesn’t come from the creature. It comes from what people decide to do to each other.
