Manny of Bonnie Studios has released an unofficial Half-Life port that runs on actual PlayStation 1 hardware today, bringing Valve’s 1998 shooter to Sony’s 1994 console with no emulation involved.
This isn’t a wrapper around the original game. It’s a full Rust rework of the engine and runtime, complete with a new renderer, a custom BSP map converter, and broader architectural changes to make the whole thing fit on the PlayStation 1. What you’re getting is a ground-up take on Half-Life, rebuilt for the hardware.
That also makes it pretty clear why Valve never shipped a PlayStation 1 version in the first place. The console has just 2 MB of RAM, and Manny of Bonnie Studios says the current build averages about 17 fps on original hardware. In larger areas, it drops to roughly 10 to 16 fps while assets, AI, scripted scenes, and level data are being reworked to stay within memory limits.
If you already own Half-Life on Steam and you keep up with demakes or homebrew projects, this looks like one to grab once Manny of Bonnie Studios puts the source code online. The reaction so far has been strongly positive, and fans seem to see it as another standout release from the developer behind PSoXide. Reportedly, Minecraft-style PS1 worlds are next.
You won’t get a ready-to-play disc image, for legal reasons, but Manny of Bonnie Studios says the source code will be published so you can build the port yourself using a legal Steam copy.
