Highguard, the new free first-person shooter (FPS) game, has arrived for players after its recent launch. Developed by Wildlight Entertainment, a studio made up of approximately 100 former Respawn developers, the title stands out for its 3v3 mode, known as ‘raid shooter’, where two teams of three fight for resources while trying to destroy the opponent’s base, incorporating elements of a return to reverse capture the flag.
A tense and unfriendly game
Despite the interesting premise, the initial reviews have not been entirely positive. The ‘arcane punk’ art style has been a subject of controversy, and many critics have pointed out that the combat can become confusing, especially during the siege phase. The shield-breaking mechanics are seen as frustrating, contributing to a gaming experience that leaves much to be desired, as players feel there is too much confusion during confrontations.
The premise of Highguard takes a novel approach in its gameplay, allowing teams to strengthen their walls and seek resources on a shared map before the siege phase is triggered. However, this unique approach can be complicated, and while some find enjoyment in the gameplay dynamics, others feel that the title arrives at the wrong time. Currently, there seems to be a shift towards more casual and social games, which could be influencing the perception of Highguard.
Despite having enjoyed some hours of the game, several critics note a lack of connection with it, which could hinder its longevity in a market where players are increasingly inclined to opt for titles that offer less tense and more friendly experiences.
