Right now, House of the Dragon season 3 hasn’t been released, and the claims that HBO is about to replace House of the Dragon next week don’t hold up. If you’ve run into headlines saying House of the Dragon season 3 is somehow close to its finale, disregard them.
House of the Dragon season 2 ran for eight episodes, wrapped on August 4, 2024, and HBO renewed the show for season 3 in June 2024.
Reporting from December 2023 also said writing was already underway on House of the Dragon seasons 3 and 4, and that some material originally expected near the end of season 2, including a major battle, had reportedly been pushed into season 3. That helps explain both the shorter season and some of the confusion around the timeline.
If you follow House of the Dragon, here’s the part that matters: HBO still treats it as one of its main fantasy dramas. Fan reaction has been more divided on pacing than it was in season 1, even with some more positive recent commentary, and there hasn’t been any major reporting that a direct replacement is arriving next week. Lanterns is set for August 16, 2026, but that’s a different franchise, aimed at a different audience, with a different release window.
So yes, House of the Dragon is more likely to return later than get swapped out now, and you can still watch the existing seasons on HBO and Max.
