This weekend at the box office, animations and horror flicks battled for supremacy, with DreamWorks’ live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon coming out on top.
The film debuted impressively with $83.7 million in the United States and $197.8 million globally.
Despite a 44% decline in its second weekend, with $37 million domestically and $90.5 million worldwide, it has maintained strong earnings, bringing its total to $160.4 million domestically and $358.1 million globally—surpassing other major releases like Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and The Little Mermaid at similar points in their runs.
Pixar’s Elio suffers worst debut in the studio’s history
In the horror genre, Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later achieved the most successful opening of the acclaimed director’s career, securing $30 million in the U.S. and $60 million worldwide.
While this win is notable, it pales in comparison to the biggest horror premiere of the year, *Sinners*, which raked in $45.6 million in April.
However, it was a disappointing weekend for Pixar’s latest offering, Elio, which opened to a mere $21 million domestically and $35 million globally, marking it as Pixar’s worst box office debut despite being released on 3,750 screens. This resulted in a disappointing per-theater average of only $5,600.
Meanwhile, Lilo & Stitch continues to draw audiences, sitting in fourth place with a total of $386.7 million domestically and $910.3 million globally, promising a likely billion-dollar milestone ahead. The tight race for box office dominance heads into next weekend with two strong contenders:
F1: The Movie, featuring Brad Pitt, and M3GAN 2.0, the much-anticipated sequel to the AI horror hit. Rumors can suggest that either could potentially dethrone How to Train Your Dragon from its current leading position.
