Hyundai workers begin strikes over Atlas robot plan: a humanoid labor test

Hyundai Motor workers in South Korea walked out in mid-July 2026 after the company moved ahead with plans to bring Boston Dynamics’ Atlas humanoid robots into its factories. It may end up being the first major labor fight built around humanoids, not the usual kind of automation.

Hyundai Motor’s 40,000-member union isn’t asking for a ban. It wants a formal voice in how the robots are deployed, plus safeguards against lost hours, lower pay, and pressure to retire early in a country that’s already crowded with industrial robots.

The union is also asking for monthly salaries instead of hourly pay, retirement at 65 rather than 60, and bigger wages and bonuses.

Hyundai says Boston Dynamics’ Atlas will first show up at Hyundai Motor’s non-union plant in Georgia by 2028, handling repetitive, physically demanding tasks. Broader use in more complex assembly work is planned for 2030, and the company says capacity could reach 30,000 robots a year.

Anyone who follows autos or automation should keep an eye on this. A big wave of displacement isn’t guaranteed, because humanoids are still difficult and expensive to fit into factory work. But South Korea already has 1,012 robots for every 10,000 workers, the government is backing smart factories as the workforce shrinks, and Mitsubishi starting in 2027, Toyota in Canada, Nissan, BMW in Germany, and Chinese EV makers are all pushing forward too.

Hyundai Motor’s first rollout will likely happen in Georgia, not South Korea, while labor tests who gets the gains before humanoids spread at scale.
