ICANN says 1,615 new generic top-level domain, or gTLD, applications from 481 entities were submitted during its 2026 filing window. That puts strings like .chatgpt, .claude, and .agent one step closer to reality, and it marks the first filing window since 2012.
The biggest plays, based on ICANN’s published applications, come from major tech companies that see custom domain endings as a way to control brand identity, signal trust, and tighten security. OpenAI filed for 15 strings, including .chatgpt and .gpt. Google filed for more than 30, among them .api, .mcp, and .agent. Meta went after .superintelligence, .agent, and .wearables, while Anthropic applied for .anthropic and .claude.
It’s a crowded field. ICANN’s application list shows 13 applicants for .agent alone, and .agi drew multiple bidders too. Any contested string can still run into objections, private settlements, or auctions before a single operator comes out on top.
If you track AI platforms, browsers, or online security, this deserves a look. ICANN says 333 of the applications are brand-related, and the base application fee starts at about $227,000 before legal, technical, and operating costs. That goes a long way toward explaining why the list is packed with big corporations.
The round was concentrated geographically too. ICANN reports that North America accounted for 864 applications and Europe for 506, roughly 85% combined. At the same time, 21 internationalized domain name bids used non-Latin scripts, including Arabic and Chinese.
Don’t expect any of these domains to go live soon. ICANN’s next major phase begins in 2027, and the first uncontested launches aren’t expected until late 2027 or early 2028.
