Some will remember it. Others weren’t even born when this happened. The success of the Game Boy Advance, Nintendo’s console, led to the release of many accessories in the late 90s, each one more peculiar than the previous one. The Game Boy Camera was part of this curious repertoire. Although it had very little success at the time, the camera has gained followers over the years and now, we can give it a second life… as a webcam.
Epilogue, the company behind GB Operator, has confirmed it. In their X profile, they have explained that they are working on an update that would allow using the Game Boy Camera as a “lo-fi” webcam.
The company clarifies that “we now have a live stream from the Game Boy Camera, but we still have to add some things and allow configuration options […] We wanted to share this update because it is very exciting to see that it finally works, and we can’t wait to see everyone having fun with it.” Epilogue doesn’t hesitate to describe the Game Boy Camera as “the worst and the best webcam you’ll ever have.” At the moment, we don’t know when this update will be released, but the company promises to launch it “soon“.
GB Operator is a device that functions as a cartridge reader for Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance. It connects to our PC or Mac and allows us to play cartridges from that era without the need for the original console. Currently, Epilogue is also working on a version for SNES, called SN Operator. Just like with GB Operator, SN Operator would allow us to play SNES cartridges from the computer.
