Instagram copies TikTok again: You can now fast-forward Reels

Instagram is once again taking cues from TikTok, this time by introducing a long-awaited fast-forward feature for Reels. With short-form videos growing increasingly longer, Meta is adapting the user experience to keep up with evolving viewer behavior and expectations.

Users can now fast-forward Instagram Reels

Meta announced that users can now fast-forward Reels by pressing and holding either side of the screen, allowing for 2x playback speed. This update, rolling out gradually, mirrors a function that TikTok users have enjoyed for some time, especially helpful when skipping through longer videos.

In recent years, Reels and TikTok have extended their maximum video lengths significantly, going well beyond the original 15-second format. As a result, many users have felt the need to control the pace of content. With this new addition, Instagram is aiming to match TikTok’s flexibility and cater to those who prefer to consume content quickly and selectively.

Concerns from creators and a delayed editing app

While many users welcome the update, content creators are more cautious, expressing concerns that fast-forwarding might lower engagement rates or reduce attention spans for more nuanced videos. The update could further incentivize creators to make even shorter, punchier content, potentially shifting the platform’s creative direction.

Separately, Meta is also developing a new video editing app for mobile called Edits, set to compete directly with TikTok’s CapCut. However, the app’s release has been delayed once again, despite expectations for a launch this month. Editspromises advanced editing capabilities for creators, offering more professional control over video production.

As Meta continues to evolve Instagram to keep pace with its rivals, the race for dominance in short-form video remains more competitive than ever.
