iOS 17.0.3 doesn’t slow down the iPhone 15; on the contrary, here are the Geekbench results

With this data in hand, it’s safe to say that Apple has achieved what it already confirmed it would do with this update: fix the bug without compromising the overall performance of the device in any way.

Yesterday, Apple released a new version of our iPhone operating system with error fixes, particularly addressing an issue that could cause the phone to overheat. We’re talking about iOS 17.0.3, and initial tests show that its performance is exceptional.

A slight performance improvement, in fact

Since iOS 17 was released to the public, there have been reports from users of iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models mentioning that their devices were heating up more than usual under certain circumstances. Fortunately, the update, iOS 17.0.3, has brought solutions focused on these issues, significantly improving this aspect. But, as is often the case with every update, there are always rumors and theories. One of the ones that has emerged is whether iOS 17.0.3 slows down the performance of these devices to prevent them from heating up.

At 9to5mac, they had the brilliant idea of checking it, and at Softonic, we were able to replicate the results. How? Very easily, by running a Geekbench test before and after the update. Here are the numbers we obtained on a 128 GB iPhone 15 Pro:

  • Single-core before the update: 2887
  • Multi-core before the update: 7124
  • Single-core after the update: 2901
  • Multi-core after the update: 7130

As we can see, there is even a slight improvement in performance. It’s true that this could be within the standard error range of the Geekbench test, but it’s still interesting. Each of the numbers corresponds to the average of three separate tests conducted 15 minutes apart.

It’s worth mentioning, furthermore, that right after the update, the performance results are indeed lower. As Apple already commented on this matter, after an update, there are a lot of background processes that slow down and also heat up the phone. It’s a normal situation that, after a few hours and with the processes completed, ceases to have any effect.

With this data in hand, it’s safe to say that Apple has achieved what they already confirmed they would do with this update: fix the error without compromising the overall performance of the device in any way. Therefore, we can now update our iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max — as well as other compatible models — to iOS 17.0.3 through Settings > Software Update.
