Three iPads that say goodbye to iPadOS 17

Recall that it was in April when the first rumor appeared about which iPhone and iPad models would lose support for iOS 17 and iPadOS 17. This rumor came from an anonymous Twitter account that, although it had correctly predicted some details, offered no further assurance about the reliability of its claims. Now, from iPhoneSoft they “confirm”, in quotes, because we are still talking about rumors, which iPad models will be left behind.

From iPhoneSoft they have already correctly predicted the scope of iOS 13, 14 and 16 compatibility, so we have to take what they now comment on iPadOS 17 with quite confidence. According to the media outlet, these are the three iPad models that rumors say would be excluded with iPadOS 17:

  • iPad 5th generation.
  • iPad Pro 9.7-inch 1st generation.
  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch 1st generation.

Put another way, these would be the iPads that would reportedly remain compatible with iPadOS 17:

  • iPad Air 3rd generation and later.
  • iPad 6th generation and later.
  • iPad mini 5th generation and later.
  • iPad Pro 2017 and later.

Thus, most iPad models of 2017 and later will support iPadOS 17. Recall, for example, how Stage Manager is limited to some models, while the ability to use Stage Manager with external display is exclusive to iPads with M series chips.

While we are waiting for news about iPhone compatibility with iOS 17, something on which rumors are contradicting each other, it is clear that iPadOS 17 is going to bring quite a few changes. For all we know, we could see an update that, after the amount of new features that came to the iPhone with iOS 16, will now catch up.

In any case, but, and although these rumors come from reliable sources, it is important to remember that Apple has not officially confirmed which devices will have compatibility. Something we will only know next June 5, when, at the next developer conference, WWDC 2023, Apple will announce all the new features.
