Apple has become a specialist in developing great cameras for its devices. Of course, this is not going to be an exception for the upcoming iPhone 15, and in particular, the iPhone 15 Pro. After numerous leaks, it is once again rumored that the top of the range iPhone will mount the most advanced LiDAR scanner we have seen to date.
According to analysts at Barclays (Blayne Curtis and Tom O’Malley), there is a strong possibility that Sony will supply the components needed to manufacture this new LiDAR sensor that would be in the iPhone 15 Pro. Thanks to this upgrade, the iPhones might be able to take their camera to the next level. The report didn’t say much more about whether we would see this sensor for the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus, but it will most likely be relegated to the Pro range.
As reported by MacRumors, Ming-Chi Kuo explained last month that Sony may have replaced the manufacturers of the previous sensor. Apparently, Sony’s manufacturing method would be much more efficient and would provide greater power if possible. If true, the iPhone 15 Pro would give us photographs that would be spectacular to say the least.
What is LiDAR sensor?
And this sensor is not new. The LiDAR sensor has been in Apple devices since the iPad Pro. Then, it made the leap to the iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro. While on the iPad Pro the sensor served to improve our experience with augmented reality, on the iPhone it also serves for something else: to improve our photographs.
The LiDAR sensor measures distances based on how long it takes for a light beam to reach an object and return to the sensor. On the photography side, the iPhone makes use of LiDAR to improve low-light situations. As a result, it increases focusing accuracy and also makes it faster (autofocus is up to 6 times faster in low light).
