Tom Rhys Harries has been chosen as the lead actor to portray Clayface in the upcoming DC Studios movie, a casting that has surprised many. The decision was confirmed by James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, who expressed on social media that both he and The Batman director, Matt Reeves, were “impressed” with Harries’ performance during the audition process. “After a long and thorough search, we finally have our Clayface,” Gunn stated.
A movie that will launch a new phase of the DCU
The Clayface movie will move quickly in its development, thanks to the script by Mike Flanagan, which has shown significant potential for the DC cinematic universe. The film is scheduled to be released on September 11, 2026, as part of the first phase of the new DC Universe: Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.
In the comics, there are multiple versions of Clayface, with the most well-known being Matt Hagen, who has shape-shifting powers, and Basil Karlo, the original who started as a troubled actor. Although it is rumored that a character similar to Basil Karlo will appear in The Batman 2 and in the Penguin series, the Clayface movie will be developed in a different continuity, suggesting that it will not affect those other projects.
It is worth mentioning that a version of Clayface has previously appeared in the animated series Creature Commandos, where he was voiced by Alan Tudyk. However, it is unclear whether the version that will be explored in the live-action movie will be the same. As production progresses, the focus on the character’s rich history promises to bring a new perspective to the DC universe, offering fans a unique cinematic experience.
