Marvel used New York Comic Con to announce Immortal Soldiers, a January 2027 one-shot that picks up directly after Avengers: Armageddon. The setup is much bleaker than a standard aftermath issue: the world is edging toward war, faith in superheroes has cratered, and Marvel is using this book to sketch out the new global order left behind by Armageddon.
According to Marvel, the one-shot leans into espionage and asks a pretty pointed question: who’s protecting Earth once its usual heroes aren’t trusted anymore?
Chip Zdarsky is writing, Christian Rosado is on interiors, and Ben Harvey is doing the cover. Based on how Marvel is positioning it, this doesn’t read like a disposable epilogue. It looks more like a handoff into the publisher’s 2027 plans, including Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto’s new Avengers run, with Spider-Man, Wolverine, Captain Marvel, Luke Cage, Daredevil, and Miracleman in the mix while other teams start forming and the Avengers themselves stay more in the background.
What really jumps out, though, is the teaser art. It seems to show Nick Fury Sr. returning as a skeletal figure in a HYDRA coat, not S.H.I.E.L.D. gear. If you keep up with Marvel’s spy corner, that alone makes this one hard to ignore, especially given Nick Fury Sr.’s arc from Original Sin to Fury #1, plus Nick Fury Jr.’s S.H.I.E.L.D. rebuild in Captain America.
