Microsoft has it clear: Artificial Intelligence could radically improve weather predictions
Artificial Intelligence can be an important driver of progress in many areas, or at least, that’s what Microsoft believes. The company, which is dedicating a great effort to the development of Copilot, is also considering using AI and its data analysis capabilities to improve weather predictions. Nowadays, they have made a lot of progress compared to decades ago, but the company believes that there are still achievable prediction margins.
As stated in an article published in Arxiv, the AI models that Microsoft is working on could represent a great boost in weather prediction, an increasingly important aspect considering that this type of predictions could be used to anticipate natural disasters caused by extreme weather conditions, such as those that occurred in many parts of the world, including Spain last September.
These models, in addition, can not only offer greater accuracy, but also have a wide range of learning, since Artificial Intelligence is capable of learning during its analysis to apply the most recent data that the system itself collects. Thus, with greater accuracy, and with the learning that “trial and error” also produces, AI can be a key tool for weather predictions.
AI as a tool
Artificial Intelligence is proving to be a very valuable piece in terms of technological advances. Through its progress, many inspiring projects are being carried out, such as the development of systems capable of restoring the voice to patients who lost it, or even systems that provide emotional companionship to elderly people, who are increasingly affected by loneliness.
However, the other side of the coin in Artificial Intelligence also presents important issues. The first one, the impact on employment that it can imply in jobs that have always been highly qualified. The second one, the ease of committing crimes through it, either with the well-known deepfakes or with the general malpractice that sometimes exists. And the third one, the environmental impact, since the servers that power AI consume huge amounts of energy and millions of liters of water for their cooling, although companies like Microsoft are seeking to create a more ecological and energy-efficient AI.
