NASA shows us what we would see if we fell into a black hole

The project generated around 10 TB of data, according to NASA, and took about five days to run using the Agency’s supercomputer.

To help us learn more about black holes, NASA has shared a 360-degree video that tries to show us what it would be like to fall into one. In this way, they have debunked many theories that we had because of movies.

The spectacular and immersive visualization is the work of a NASA supercomputer. The project generated about 10 terabytes of data, according to the space agency, and took about five days to run with only 0.3% of the 129,000 processors of the supercomputer. The same project on a regular laptop would have taken over a decade to complete.

The video shows a flight towards a supermassive black hole surrounded by a hot and bright gas disk. This one in particular has 4.3 million times the mass of our sun, equivalent to the monster located at the center of our galaxy, the Milky Way.

Our body wouldn’t stretch like a spaghetti

“The simulation approaches, briefly orbits, and then crosses the event horizon – the point of no return – of a monstrous black hole very similar to the one found at the center of our galaxy,” explains NASA. The video also includes tags to better understand the development of events.

Black holes are regions of space where gravity is so strong that nothing – not even light – can escape from them. Scientists have not yet determined what actually happens inside black holes, although some theories suggest that they contain infinite density at the center.

Oh, and don’t have nightmares. The chances of Earth falling into a black hole are extremely low.
