NCIS: New York debuted on CBS in fall 2026 and pulled in 5.6 million viewers, a very solid opening for the newest NCIS spinoff. That’s a strong start for CBS, especially with a lot of people doubtful about yet another city-based version of the franchise, fans reacting all over the map, and the usual comparisons to the rest of the NCIS lineup.
The premiere beat the show that used to occupy its time slot, and at this point it stands as the biggest new fall 2026 series so far. It also came surprisingly close to the NCIS season 24 premiere, which drew 6.45 million viewers, and it outperformed NCIS: Origins season 3 even with Mark Harmon back as Gibbs. CBS has been building the NCIS brand ever since it spun off from JAG in 2003, and now that franchise stretches across 24 seasons and 509 episodes, with NCIS: Los Angeles, NCIS: New Orleans, NCIS: Sydney, NCIS: Hawai’i, NCIS: Origins, NCIS: New York, and the still upcoming Tony & Ziva series.
If you keep up with NCIS, this debut is probably one to check out. The big worry going in was franchise fatigue, and LL Cool J’s Sam Hanna shifting to New York divided fans who’ve always tied Sam Hanna to G. Callen. That move pretty much closes the book on that NCIS: Los Angeles pairing, while also making life harder for a new ensemble that still has to carve out its own identity. And some viewers were hoping CBS would put more focus on Tony & Ziva first.
NCIS: Sydney already gave CBS a pretty good example of why taking that kind of risk can pay off. It opened to 10.2 million linear viewers once encores were included, became Paramount+’s top Australian series, picked up renewals for seasons 2 and 3, and showed that strong cast chemistry and a distinctive setting can carry more weight than complaints about formula or politics.
