Netflix’s anime version of Hirohiko Araki’s JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 7, Steel Ball Run, premiered on March 19 as one of Netflix’s biggest anime launches of 2026, with weekly episodes picking up again on September 25. The opener landed well for its take on the race’s first stage. Later episodes, though, pushed the conversation somewhere else: whether this adaptation sands down the manga’s sharper social and political themes.
If you only watched that first episode, you saw a strong adaptation of the race’s opening stretch. As the season went on, the debate shifted toward thematic dilution, not just the soundtrack or pacing. Critics and longtime readers argue that the anime tones down the manga’s engagement with nationalism, nation-building, capitalism, industrialization, race, immigration, and colonization. They point in particular to Pocoloco losing explicit commentary about freedom after slavery, and to Sandman losing ties to Native dispossession. Taken together, those changes weaken Araki’s larger critique of power, erasure, and the way nationalism gets built in the first place.
If you keep up with Netflix anime, this kind of backlash will feel familiar. Fans have been here before with complaints about dialogue, subtitles, and shifts in emphasis. Netflix’s 2019 release of Neon Genesis Evangelion still gets brought up, especially the change from “I love you” to “I like you,” along with the loss of “Fly Me to the Moon.” Fans and critics still cite both as examples of business or localization decisions changing how a work lands for global audiences.
If what you want most is the race itself and the look of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, this is still a solid watch. But if you’re coming to Part 7 for its full social and political bite, you may feel that some of that edge has been trimmed away. You can watch Steel Ball Run on Netflix.
