The latest update to the emojis we use on our iPhone, iPad, or Mac is on its way. The Unicode Consortium, responsible for approving new emojis, is set to review the proposal for Emoji 15.1 specification in September 2023. According to Emojipedia, the new batch of emojis could include a rather curious variety of symbols, ranging from body gestures to a cute little bird.
Several new emoji and more options for the ones we already know
The potential new additions to the emoji family include a headshake and head-nod gesture, a lemon, a phoenix bird, a broken chain, a brown mushroom, and silhouettes of families and individuals walking, running, and more, all facing to the right. It is important to note that we are discussing proposals that are currently under review. However, it is worth mentioning that this phase typically includes emojis with a high likelihood of approval, so we can have a fair amount of confidence in the list.
As always, Emojipedia has created sample designs for the proposed emojis, but each manufacturer, in this case Apple, will adapt their own representation of them. Therefore, while the image above gives us an idea of what to expect, the final appearance may vary slightly.
In addition to the new additions, one of the most significant aspects of this update is the inclusion of 108 new directional emojis. Just as we can currently select the skin tone for many emojis representing people, now we will be able to choose the direction in which they are moving.
As for the release date, it is expected that the Emoji 15.1 standard will be finalized in September of this year. From this point onward, if we follow the original schedule, we should see the arrival of these new symbols with iOS 17.1 or iOS 17.2, which Apple typically releases in early in the year. In fact, the last emoji pack was introduced with iOS 16.4 in February 2023, so in a few months, we should have several new emojis available.
