Nintendo has decided to end its ability to share content through Twitter due to the exorbitant price of Musk’s company API.
There was a time when social media was so popular that video game consoles had to introduce a button specifically designed for them. The screenshot button that takes us to a menu to share them is now essential in any controller. But it wasn’t always like this. The popularity of Facebook, Instagram, and especially Twitter, is what caused this. And now, the last stronghold of this relationship has fallen.
Nintendo has announced that, starting from June 10th, it will remove the option to share screenshots from the photo album on Twitter. Similarly, it will no longer be possible to send friend requests to friends who have their account associated with the service. This marks the end of the integration between Nintendo Switch and Twitter.
This is motivated by the abusive price increase of using the Twitter API introduced in March 2023. One of the first changes made by Elon Musk that has led multiple companies to completely disassociate from the social network. Including Xbox, which removed integration with its consoles in April 2023, and Sony, which did the same with PlayStation in November 2023.
In this way, the integration of the only social network that was present in all consoles before the fateful purchase comes to an end. Thus, marking the end of an era.
Nintendo Switch Online is an essential application if you want to fully enjoy multiplayer games on Nintendo Switch, such as Splatoon 2, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, ARMS or Pokkén Tournament DX.
