Nintendo has announced ambitious plans for the future of cinema, focusing on the release of movies based on its most popular properties.
During a recent financial results presentation, President Shuntaro Furukawa revealed that the company plans a “consistent pace” of releases, starting with “Super Mario Galaxy” in April 2026, followed by “The Legend of Zelda” in May 2027.
This cinematic push is based on the resounding success of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which grossed $1.361 billion in 2023, attracting both gamers and a general audience.
Cinema, another medium to reach millions of potential users
According to Furukawa, Nintendo not only licenses its properties but is also deeply involved in the production and financing of its movies.
The iconic creator of Mario and Zelda, Shigeru Miyamoto, is also co-producing both films, ensuring a direct connection between the video games and their film adaptation.
The first movie, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” received positive feedback from the audience, who expressed that they were pleased to enjoy the character they loved in their childhood, this time accompanied by their own children in the cinema. This type of intergenerational connection reinforces the idea that the Nintendo brand has the power to attract new audiences with each release.
Regarding the film “The Legend of Zelda,” the direction will be in charge of Wes Ball, known for his work on “The Maze Runner.” Although few details about the plot and cast are known, it has been confirmed that there are actors already involved, such as Bo Bragason and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth in the main roles.
With these upcoming releases, Nintendo seems determined to continue building on its legacy in entertainment, opening the door to more stories and characters from its vast universe that could be translated to the big screen in the future.
