No Man’s Sky turns ten years old and, to celebrate, announces a new update called Cosmos. Accompanied by a trailer, although they haven’t clarified many details about it, it seems that it will once again focus more on space travel and everything that comes with it than on the planets, their flora and fauna, as recent updates did. Going back to the game’s roots and what it offered at the outset for those who played it ten years ago.
No Man’s Sky is still alive and will be for a long time
Because the story of No Man’s Sky is a story of disappointment and redemption. Released with promises of a universe teeming with life and with plenty of space to explore, players were disappointed to find a relatively empty universe with little to do, and it was very difficult to run into other players. Something that Hello Games, the game’s developers, have been refining over the years.
No Man’s Sky, ten years later, looks little like the game it was at launch. Far more expansive and refined, it’s one of the most spectacular comeback stories in the history of video games. If not the most spectacular. Even so, there are many players who prefer the original game over this more polished version. And for good reason. That was a rougher and emptier version, but also one with more heart: getting lost in its vastness and simply exploring and taking in its sheer scale had a charm that can’t be replicated with the tremendous number of things to do in the game today.
While Hello Games has been developing a new game since 2018, Light No Fire, an open-world survival and exploration game on an Earth-sized planet with a fantasy setting, many of the things they want to add to the game they’re still testing in No Man’s Sky. So it seems we’ve still got No Man’s Sky for a good while yet. Much to the delight of its fans.
