Hugging Face has reportedly been acquired by Nvidia in a deal valued at about $12.9 billion. Some reports push the number past $13 billion. So far, though, neither Nvidia nor Hugging Face has confirmed any of it.
If this acquisition does happen, it would rank among the biggest software deals of the current AI boom. It would also move Nvidia further beyond chips and into the developer platform layer, where Hugging Face has carved out a central role since its 2016 founding. For millions of researchers, startups, and big companies that publish, discover, and deploy models and datasets, Hugging Face has become the GitHub of machine learning.
For Nvidia, buying Hugging Face could help shore up its hardware business, widen its footprint in cloud services, model hosting, and enterprise tools, and keep it tied into the workflows that matter most. That last part matters, especially as developers such as OpenAI and Anthropic continue working on custom chips.
The reported price would represent a massive jump from Hugging Face’s 2023 valuation of $4.5 billion, set in a funding round backed by Nvidia, Google, and Salesforce. Measured against roughly $150 million in annualized revenue, based on reported estimates, the number looks expensive.
If you use Hugging Face all the time, this reported deal is something to keep an eye on. The big question is whether Hugging Face would remain neutral across AMD and Intel hardware, or start functioning more like an Nvidia-first channel.
You can still use Hugging Face on the web for now. Still, expect European regulators, competing chip companies, and cloud providers to look at this closely, because a Nvidia-Hugging Face deal could affect a lot more than the chip business.
