The film Sirat, by Spanish filmmaker Oliver Laxe, has been nominated for two awards at the 98th edition of the Oscars: Best International Feature Film and Best Sound.

This distinction highlights Laxe’s outstanding work, as he has managed to have his film compete among finalists in such coveted categories. Sirat was selected by the Spanish Film Academy over titles like Romería and Sorda, confirming its relevance in the current cinematic landscape.

From Oscar to Kubrick

Nevertheless, the competition is fierce. Sirat is competing in the Best Film category against Valor sentimental and El agente secreto, two productions that have also captured attention for their quality and narrative.

Although the probability of victory is uncertain, the nomination already provides a boost in the international projection of the filmmaker, who enjoys recognition in his career.

Looking to the future, Laxe has revealed to ScreenRant that he is working on his next project, which aims to be “his magnum opus”. In his own words, he wants to conceive “a symphony” visual that pays homage to 2001: A Space Odyssey.

With this, Laxe hopes to take viewers on a hypnotic journey that relies on the power of cinema and imagery. With Sirat leaving an indelible mark, everything seems to indicate that the filmmaker is on the threshold of a vibrant new chapter in his career.
