Last Sunday, December 20, the PC Gaming Show Tokyo was held, a video game event showcasing various video games, both announced and unannounced, focused mainly on the Asian and PC market. Among the announcements there were several unexpected surprises, but the biggest announcement of all was the return of a franchise that was already considered lost to time: the Lufia saga.
Two legendary JRPGs from the 16-bit era
Lufia 1 & 2 The Sinistrals Saga will bring these two iconic Super Nintendo JRPGs back to PC for the first time ever with quality-of-life improvements, a graphical facelift, and a rewritten script and a new translation. Something similar to what they’re going to do with another great classic of the console, Terranigma. The first Lufia was never released on any platform other than the Super Nintendo, but Lufia 2: Rise of the Sinistrals had a little-known remake on Nintendo DS that’s now largely forgotten.
Regarding this re-release, Taito producer Yuichi Toyama, who is in charge of it, has stated that the team started trying to secure the rights to the games four or five years ago to bring the series back. While Clear Rives Games producer James Wragg has stated that the goal is “to emulate them as close to the original games as possible”. with the aim of satisfying those who played these games back in the day in their original form.
Already available to add to your Steam wishlist, the game won’t launch until 2027, with no specific date yet. So we’ll still have to wait to find out when we’ll be able to play these revived Japanese JRPG classics.
